Using auto pilot - jcam89 - 10-24-2012
I was wondering at which point different people engage auto pilot? Is there a real world protocall for this? I generally try to hand fly the plane up to 10,000 then engage the AP. The biggest challenge I find with this is keeping the AS below 250 without an AT. Just seeking different opinions.

It depends on what you are flying but in most airliners you push the TOGA button which sets proper take off thrust. This means that A/T will be engaged. I will usually fly to 10,000 but sometimes higher if I want to work on manually flying.
If you don't have an A/T then yes you will have to manage the throttles carefully.
